Mercedes-AMG's First In-House SUV Is Electric and Tops Out at 1,153 hp
The new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV is the first full-size SUV AMG developed entirely in-house in its 59-year history. The top GT 63 has three electric motors, 1,153 hp in U.S. trim, up to 710 kW charging and a simulated V8 soundtrack.

Mercedes-AMG has built plenty of fast SUVs, but they’ve always started life as regular Mercedes models. Not this one. On October 17, AMG revealed the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, which the company calls its first full-size SUV developed completely in-house in its 59-year history. And it’s fully electric.
It’s the second model on AMG’s dedicated electric platform, called AMG.EA, and it comes in three versions: the GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63.
What’s under the skin
1. Three motors, a lot of horsepower. The top GT 63 uses three axial-flux electric motors, a compact, flat motor design that packs a lot of power into a small space. Mercedes rates it at 860 kW, which works out to 1,153 hp in U.S. figures. Mercedes-Benz USA says it does 0 to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds with a top speed of 168 mph. For comparison, Tesla quotes 2.5 seconds for the Model X Plaid.
2. Very fast charging. AMG says the GT SUV can charge at up to 710 kW, adding up to about 279 miles of WLTP-rated range in 10 minutes (WLTP is the European test cycle, which usually reads higher than U.S. EPA numbers). Of course, you’d need a charger that can actually deliver that much power, and those are still rare.
3. It fakes a V8, on purpose. Since an electric SUV is nearly silent, AMG gives it an optional sound system that plays engine sounds recorded from the AMG GT R, and it adds seat shakers so you can feel the rumble too. Love it or hate it, it’s very on-brand.
4. A cheaper entry point. The GT 53 uses two conventional electric motors instead of the axial-flux setup. Orders for it opened in Europe on October 20, starting at €113,050 in Germany. The GT 55 and GT 63 follow in spring 2027.
Why it matters
Performance brands have been nervous about going electric, partly because the sound and feel are such a big part of the appeal. AMG’s answer here is to lean into the strengths of EVs (instant torque and huge charging speeds) while recreating the parts drivers say they’ll miss. It also shows AMG betting on its own dedicated EV platform rather than just tuning someone else’s.
For U.S. buyers, Mercedes-Benz USA says all three models arrive at dealerships in 2027. U.S. pricing hasn’t been announced yet.

So be honest: would a fake V8 soundtrack make you more or less likely to buy an electric SUV? Let me know.
